CINDERELLA

Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Cinderella. She lived with her step mother and two step sisters.
The step mother and sisters were conceited and bad tempered. They treated Cinderella very badly. Her step mother made Cinderella do the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing the floor, cleaning the pot and pan and preparing the food for the family. The two step sisters, on the other hand, did not work about the house. Their mother gave them many handsome dresses to wear.
One day, the two step sister received an invitation to the ball that the king’s son was going to give at the palace. They were excited about this and spent so much time choosing the dresses they would wear. At last, the day of the ball came, and away went the sisters to it. Cinderella could not help crying after they had left. “Why are crying, Cinderella?” a voice asked. She looked up and saw her fairy godmother standing beside her, “because I want so much to go to the ball” said Cinderella. “Well” said the godmother,”you’ve been such a cheerful, hardworking, uncomplaining girl that I am going to see that you do go to the ball”.
Magically, the fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a fine coach and mice into a coachman and two footmen. Her godmother tapped Cinderella’s raged dress with her wand, and it became a beautiful ball gown. Then she gave her a pair of pretty glass slippers. “Now, Cinderella”, she said; “You must leave before midnight”. Then away she drove in her beautiful coach.
Cinderella was having a wonderfully good time. She danced again and again with the king’s son.
Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve, she ran toward the door as quickly as she could. In her hurry, one of her glass slipper was left behind.
A few days later, the king’ son proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the glass slipper. Her step sisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard they squeezed their toes into it. In the end, the king’s page let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.
Finally, she was driven to the palace. The king’s son was overjoyed to see her again. They were married and live happily ever after.
NARCISSUS

Once upon a time in Ancient Greece lived a young man called Narcissus, who was greatly admired, for he was very handsome. Narcissus was very proud of his perfect face and graceful body, and never lost the chance to look at his reflection in any sheet of water he happened to pass. He would lie for hours admiring his gleaming dark eyes, slender nose, slim hips and the mop of curly hair that crowned the perfect  oval of his face.
One day, Narcissus was walking close to a river where the clear waters mirrored his beautiful face. “ you are handsome,Narcissus!” he told himself as he bent down to admire his reflection. “There’s nobody so handsome in the whole world! I’d love to kiss you.”
Narcissus desired to kiss his own reflection and he leant closer to the water. But he lost his balance and toppled into the river. Narcissus could not swim and so he drowned. But when the gods discovered that the most beautiful being on earth had died, they decided that such beauty could not be forgotten.
The gods turned Narcissus into a scented flower which,to this day, blossoms in the mountains in spring, and which is still called Narcissus.

The Fox and the Grapevine

One day a fox, feeling very hungry, was walking through a forest. As he was going along, thinking of what he could find to eat, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He stopped and looked up. There , hanging from the branch of a tree, were some beautiful, ripe clusters of grapes. While he was standing there, looking up, he exclaimed, “ At last, I have my dinner! I can’t wait to get those sweet, juicy grapes in my mouth.
There was one problem, however. The fruit was on a grapevine rather high about the ground. The hungry fox didn’t think it was too high. So, he jumped up to try to reach the fruit.
Again and again he jumped. Each time, he leapt a little higher into the air, but not high enough to get the grapes. No matter how hard he tried, he was not able to do it. Finally, he sat down to rest.
While he was sitting there under the tree, the plump grapes looked so delicious that he could almost tasted them. So he decided to try again. After leaping two or three times, however, he realized that he was not jumping as high as he had done before. Feeling very tired, he sat down again, and after thinking for a moment, he decided to leave.
While he was walking away, feeling sorry for himself because he couldn’t get what he wanted, he stopped and looked back at the fruit once more. But finally he started on his way again, saying to himself, “ Who wants those grapes anyway? They look green. They’re probably very sour.”
